33kV Solar Farm - North West

Serconnect delivered 33kV, 11kV, and LV connection works for a new solar farm, with end-to-end services, including substation installation and transformer installation, carried out professionally and swiftly.

Primary Substation
Overview
Our client required full installation of HV and LV electrical infrastructure, including integration of five 33kV transformers and associated connections into the local DNO’s 33kV boundary substation. With complex site requirements and no existing means to connect the transformers into their network, the client turned to Serconnect for our specialist expertise as an accredited Independent Connection Provider.
Solution
Our team immediately engaged with on-site stakeholders, carrying out site visits and producing all required safety documentation and inductions. Using our in-house lines teams, we constructed a single-leg transformer pole with 11kV and LV pole termination, fully compliant with SPEN policy. We then installed the LV connection into the DNO boundary substation, ready for energisation.

The project presented unique challenges, including non-standard 33kV transformer configurations with side-entry cable boxes elevated at 2m. Our in-house fitting teams engineered bespoke ladder racking to support the 33kV cables from ground level to the transformer. With our HV jointers’ work-at-height training, we were able to complete top-access 33kV terminations safely and effectively. On the LV side, our teams managed the efficient termination of 12 x 630mm copper singles per transformer, securing and cleating them onto a purpose-built frame for long-term reliability.
Outcome
Through close coordination with the client and other on-site teams, Serconnect ensured the smooth and efficient delivery of the renewable energy connection works at the solar farm. Despite the complexity of the transformer configurations and challenging access requirements, all installations were completed safely, to standard, and on schedule. The project demonstrated the strength of our in-house expertise, particularly our lines, fitting, and jointing teams; allowing us to deliver both HV and LV works effectively. Few ICPs have this full capability, and it provided a clear advantage for the client, ensuring the solar farm was ready for energisation on time and to the highest standard.
