EG Group - Rivington Services

To support the development of the UK’s first public HGV truck charging site, we carried out a directional drill at Rivington Services, significantly reducing project timescales through our efficient processes.

Overview
Our client needed to install car and wagon charging points on North- and Southbound services. Their main challenge was to get an HV supply to Northbound, as the supply was brought to site on the Southbound side.
Solution
We offered to source a company to carry out a directional drill under the M61 to allow an HV cable to be pulled over to the Northbound site. This included civil solutions such as geotechnical surveys, borehole testing, highway drain surveys before and after the drill, drill pits excavated to exact X and Y coordinates, highway TM to close the hard shoulder and slow lane on either side of the motorway, and finally, to organise and mobilise a directional drilling outfit.

The client was kept updated throughout the works and was over the moon that everything had gone well and was kept on schedule. Even though we had a rather large quantity of work (substation installation for two 2MVA substations and two boundary RMU substations, including HV and LV cable installation) and had a major directional drill to organise using several different companies, we still managed to beat the DNO timescales for their reinforcement works.
Outcome
Carrying out this directional drill meant that a separate application was not required to obtain a separate supply from the existing network on the Northbound side. This dramatically reduced costs and timeframes for the client.

The directional drill was carried out efficiently and in one night, causing minimal disturbance to the client, customers at the service station, and highway traffic. The drill was completed, and ducting was pulled in by 4am. Serconnect staff then had the HV cable pulled in and terminated the following day, meaning the site would be ready to energise. This also reduced timescales for the client and allowed us to carry out all reinstatement works in the same week to benefit the client's customers.

Serconnect have been a great ICP to work with, especially in handling the more challenging projects like Rivington Service Station. We knew that installing the UK’s first HGV EV charging station on a busy UK motorway would be a challenge, but they handled the project meticulously and efficiently.
