Transformer and Switchgear Maintenance

Ensure your transformer is running as efficiently as possible with our transformer maintenance services. With thorough investigation and diagnostics from our experienced engineers, we ensure that any issues with your transformer are identified and rectified for continued operation.

Thorough maintenance by experienced engineers

Ensuring reliable transformer performance

At Serconnect, we understand the critical role transformers play in electrical infrastructure. While High-Voltage (HV) switchgear and transformers are generally reliable, failures—though rare—can have catastrophic consequences. Our expert transformer maintenance services are designed to mitigate risks and ensure optimal performance, longevity, and safety.

Comprehensive transformer maintenance and service

Our transformer maintenance services follow manufacturer recommendations, industry best practices, and operational guidelines. We employ advanced diagnostic techniques, including non-intrusive Partial Discharge (PD) and Thermographic Surveys, to identify potential issues early and prioritise necessary maintenance.

Transformer and switchgear maintenance are types of substation maintenance that involve the regular inspection and servicing of key substation components. These maintenance processes help to ensure that your substation is free of faults and operates safely and efficiently.

For transformers, this includes checking oil quality, insulation resistance, and temperature levels, as well as tightening connections and inspecting for leaks or wear.

For switchgears, maintenance involves testing circuit breakers, relays, and interlocks; cleaning contacts; and confirming that all mechanical and electrical components are functioning correctly.
Transformer maintenance is essential for monitoring the health of your infrastructure. Though transformers often run with no apparent issues, even small problems can later manifest into larger ones. The potential damage to your transformer, costly repair and downtime that could occur as a result of this are in your best interest to avoid. As a result, transformer maintenance is a highly worthwhile investment.

Additionally, maintenance is required to form part of insurance and compliance requirements, along with asset condition reports.
The comprehensive list of our transformer maintenance and service processes is as follows:

  • Environmental Assessment: Inspect transformer housing/enclosure to ensure suitability for its location and environmental conditions.

  • Identification Verification: Confirm the presence, accuracy, and legibility of identification labelling.

  • Advanced Diagnostics: Perform Partial Discharge Testing and Thermographic Inspections to detect potential faults.

  • Overheating & Stress Checks: Identify signs of overheating, panel stress.

  • Thorough Cleaning: Use specialised vacuum cleaning to remove dust and debris from transformer housing and windings.

  • Switchgear Integrity Checks: Examine paintwork, finishes, and any visible discharge signs on switchgear housing.

  • Asset Recording: Document manufacturer details, type, serial number, voltage/current ratings, and more.

  • Safety Indicator Checks: Ensure safety indicators are functioning correctly and within the recommended range.

  • Interlock Verification: Test interlocks for proper functioning and ensure they cannot be overridden.

  • Mechanical & Electrical Checks: Secure nuts, screws, circlips, and split pins, while verifying cable termination integrity.

  • Earthing & Continuity Tests: Conduct continuity checks on earthing connections, including primary and secondary isolating contacts.

  • Torque Testing: Perform torque checks where required by manufacturer guidelines.

  • Contact & Connection Testing: Conduct Ductor Testing to verify the integrity of electrical connections.

  • Secondary System Examination: Inspect secondary contacts, fuses, wiring, and auxiliary switches for integrity.

  • Temperature Monitoring: Test temperature monitoring devices to confirm correct operation.

  • Insulation Resistance Testing: Evaluate insulation resistance of secondary wiring and windings using HV pressure testing methods.

  • Terminations & Bus Bar Connections: HV & LV cable torqued to correct specifications.
  • Our general maintenance contracts include everything you need for your operations to continue to run smoothly, compliantly and cost-effectively. This includes routine maintenance, fault response, protection testing, oil analysis, thermographic imaging, weeding, graffiti removal, groundwork repairs and more!
Sites with their own transformer or substation must comply with key UK regulations, including the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, BS 7671, and the Distribution Code, as well as guidance from the HSE and ENA. These standards not only ensure the safe operation, maintenance, and integration of high-voltage infrastructure with the wider electrical network, but are also essential for meeting insurance requirements.
