01. WHO ARE SERCONNECT?

Founded in Early 2020, Serconnect is the product of four established, time served companies within the Electrical Utilities Industry forming together to bring about a fresh and market leading approach to all things Power.

We pride ourselves on being a NERS accredited Independent Connections Provider (ICP) offering a comprehensive and professional service from a team of in-house specialists with a wealth of industry experience totalling over 115 years.

As the only Option 2 ICP in the North West, we are specialists in electrical works from LV to 33kV.

02. WHAT IS AN ICP?

An Independent Connection Provider (ICP) is a specialised company or organisation that is authorised and accredited to design, install, and connect electrical infrastructure to a distribution network.

The term ICP was born out of a legislation change in the early 2000s when OFGEM opened up the electrical service market to improve competition and help ensure customers received the best price available.

ICPs play a crucial role in the energy industry by facilitating the connection of new or modified electricity installations to the existing distribution network. They work closely with Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) to ensure that these connections are carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and technical standards.

ICPs are typically contracted by developers, businesses, or individuals who require a new electricity connection for their premises or projects.

03. WHAT IS THE NERS SCHEME?

National Electricity Registration Scheme (NERS) is a UK wide accreditation scheme operated by Lloyd’s Register and operates on behalf of the UK Distribution Network Operators (DNOs).

Under these schemes they perform technical assessment of the service providers who elect to be assessed for accreditation for contestable works associated with the installation of electrical connections. Once accredited, the service provider is a NERS provider, commonly known as an Independent Connection Provider (ICP).

A NERS provider carries out work such as design new connections to the network, dig and fill trenches on and around the property to be connected, and install electrical switches and transformers.

04. WHAT IS A DNO?

A Distribution Network Operator (DNO) is a regulated company or organisation responsible for managing and operating the distribution network for electricity in a specific geographic area or region.

Distribution networks are a crucial part of the electricity supply chain, as they transport electricity from the high-voltage transmission network to homes, businesses, and other end-users.

05. WHAT IS AN IDNO?

An Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO) is a type of electricity distribution company that operates independently of the traditional Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) in the electricity supply chain. IDNOs are responsible for managing and maintaining their own electricity distribution networks in specific geographic areas or regions, much like DNOs.

The key differences of an IDNO are that they are private companies or organisations that have been granted licenses or authorisation to operate distribution networks in competition with DNOs. IDNOs are subject to the same regulatory requirements and standards as DNOs and must ensure the safe and reliable distribution of electricity to customers within their designated areas.

The introduction of IDNOs into the electricity distribution market is often intended to promote competition, increase efficiency, and provide customers with more options for their electricity supply. This competitive aspect can lead to potential benefits such as improved service quality, innovation, and cost-effective solutions.
